A BEAUTIFUL SMILE WITH
ORTHODONTICS
Orthodontics is the dental specialty that addresses the diagnosis, prevention, management, and correction of mal-positioned teeth and jaws. Common problems include teeth crowding of teeth, spacing as well as misaligned bite patterns
Invisible Braces Vs. Metal braces
Thus, orthodontics focuses on rectifying these issues while also improving the person's smile, general well-being and self-esteem.
Treatment may require several months to a few years and entails using dental braces and other appliances to gradually adjust tooth position and jaw alignment. In cases where the malocclusion is severe, jaw surgery may be incorporated in the treatment plan. Following the evaluation of your dental issues, your Orthodontist will propose the necessary intervention.
All children benefit from an early Orthdodontic consultation, between the ages of 7 and 8 years old, in order to identify and sometimes even prevent the development of orthodontic problem. Jaw and bite problems, in particular, need early intervention in order to avoid more aggressive treatment in the future, such as permanent teeth extractions of jaw surgery.
Different types of Orthodontic treatments:
Palatal expander – This orthodontic appliance is used for patients who need their upper jaw widened in order to correct their bite and breathing problems.
Fixed Braces – This treatment uses brackets and wires that are attached to the teeth, either in front of the teeth or at the back of the teeth to gently shift them into more desirable positions. These come in many variations (traditional, self-ligating, Damon, etc..). Ceramic braces are the clear alternative to traditional metal braces, and are less noticeable.
IClear aligners (Eon aligners, Invisalign, etc.): Clear aligners are removable transparent appliances that allow more discretion when it comes to straightening teeth. Since they are removable, however, they only work if the patient moves them according to instructions.
Functional and myofunctional appliances: usually these are removable appliances (although few are fixed) that target jaw growth and development in cases of bite problems and jaw growth discrepancies.
Retainers: These constitute the last stage of orthodontic treatment. Whether fixed or removable, they hold the teeth while the gum and bones stabilize in the new post-orthodontics position. They are also necessary to ensure long-term stability throughout the patient's lifetime.
Crooked teeth make it more difficult for you to take care of or reach certain areas of your teeth and gums, eventually leading to plaque buildup. Malpositioned bites and jaws, in addition to crooked teeth, affect your satisfaction with your smile. Because your teeth and smile are meant to last your entire lifetime, At Al Maher Medical Center, our specialized Orthodontists can help you select the right treatment to straighten and align your crooked teeth.
